¿Quién dijo que las flores son cosa de primavera? Muchas plantas y arbustos abren sus flores en estas fechas, cuando el invierno da sus últimos coletazos y los efectos primaverales comienzan a notarse, inundando de color y alegría casas, parques y jardines
La camelia (o las camelias, porque existen más de 8.000 variedades) son un claro ejemplo de esto. Su floración suele producirse, dependiendo de la zona, la tierra y las condiciones climáticas, entre diciembre y abril. Un arbusto que llena de vida los meses más duros del año y que ahora está en su máximo esplendor.
¿Puede tenerse en casa? Sí, pero con un cuidado especial. Se trata de una planta que resiste muy bien el frío, por lo que exteriores o terrazas son su ubicación ideal. En el interior hay que buscarle un lugar fresco (entre 5-12 grados y humedad del 60%), alejado de la calefacción, que es uno de sus grandes enemigos. Es una planta que necesita mucha luz para florecer, pero procurando que los rayos del sol no le den directamente.
Riego
El riego adecuado para la camelia varía según la época del año. En estos momentos, durante la floración, necesita recibir muy poquita cantidad de agua, para que sus pedúnculos se formen fuertes y soporten mejor el peso de los capullos de las flores. Durante el verano, el riego debe ser constante, mientras que en invierno será más moderado.
Lo ideal es utilizar agua tibia, a ser posible de la lluvia o mineral, ya que no presentan restos de cal. De no ser posible, utilizaremos agua del grifo con un poco de vinagre.
Suelo
La tierra que le pongamos también es una elección clave. Las camelias requieren de un suelo con un ph ácido. Para conseguir el más adecuado, consulta a nuestros expertos. Una mezcla adecuada sería, por ejemplo, añadiendo una capa de brezo, turba rubia o tierra de castaño.
Flores
La presentación de las camelias es variable según el gusto del dueño. Se puede buscar tener muchas flores pequeñas o pocas y grandes. Para conseguir uno u otro resultado, la clave está en el número de capullos por rama. Si buscas una planta llena de florecillas, deja los capullos en las ramas. Si, por el contrario, prefieres espectaculares flores grandes, deberás dejar un único capullo por rama o brote arrancando el resto.
Cuidado
Para su cuidado, a pesar de ser plantas acostumbradas al frío, conviene tener algunas precauciones, especialmente si ya han florecido o si hay riesgo de helada.:
- En interior, aparta las plantas de las ventanas por la noche.
- Si estás en terraza o exteriores, protégelas con plástico de burbujas. Además, aíslalas del suelo con una madera o cualquier otro material. Si ya tienes flores, protégelas con periódicos o campanas de cristal.
- No riegues ni abones en días de helada.
